Massachusetts legislature passes a bill regulating salaries for the Suffolk County Clerk of Courts office.

The law exempts the Suffolk County Clerk of Courts and his staff from all future pay raises. The bill is passed four years after clerk John Powers fired the brother of Senate President William Bulger, ex-convict James “Whitey” Bulger, from a job as janitor. The ban continues until Powers retires in 1988.
